4 placements (2 projects) are currently being advertised on the Excel placements page, under “Engineering & Scientific”. This is the 5th year that we have run these internships with external partners (the city council placement’s deadline was a few weeks ago, shortlisted candidates will be contacted soon). A paid internship looks excellent on new graduates’ CVs. These placements are only for 3rd year students to apply for, the wildlife trust wants people who have completed a research dissertation. Landbased Education Apprenticeship and education volunteering – Embercombe, Devon

Sent in by Christine Taylor from the Hampshire Museums service

“Landbased Education Apprenticeship
We are accepting applications for our landbased education apprenticeship, a year-long programme at Embercombe a 50 acre site in Devon.
The apprenticeship at Embercombe is an extended leadership programme for people who imagine a life of making a difference. It is an adventure and quite tough at times. Almost every apprentice who has ever come to us has discovered that walking the ‘twin trail’ of leadership is never easy, sometimes frightening, frequently testing, and ultimately rewarding. A strong camaraderie develops between the apprentices as friendships are formed which may last a lifetime, they learn to surf the turbulent waves of our multi-faceted social enterprise, and they dream awake a life of their choosing.
The apprenticeship in Landbased learning is for those who are passionate about instigating change through bringing children and young people into a positive relationship with our world.
As well as being part of the team delivering the content of courses, the apprentice takes a holistic view of running education programmes and assists with:
· programme planning,
· programme administration,
· cooking, cleaning and gardening on the programmes.
If you or someone you know is passionate about education as a vehicle for inner and outer change then please see our website for more information

Ecological surveyor intern position – Greengage, London

Greengage are looking for interns to gain experience in field ecology on a number of reptile, bat, dormice, great crested newt and other protected species surveys. Morgan Taylor (Southampton alumni) says “The position will be based in London (we have an office in central London near London Bridge/Waterloo) although most of the time we will need them for surveys outside of the office. The main surveys at the moment that we will allocate time for an intern will be in Colchester, Leatherhead, Woking and Mitcham, although there will undoubtedly be a number of other sites that they will be required for in and around Greater London – later in the season for example we have a site which requires the trapping and translocation of hundreds of lizards in Reigate which we will need helping hands for.  I should think that there could be some office time in London also to help draft reports from the surveys.

The position is available straight away (we are looking for surveyors to help out ASAP), and will be available throughout the summer, obviously dependent on levels of work that we have on – although at this rate there will be a big need for at least one extra surveyor on and off until autumn. We can be fairly flexible with when we survey, although it would help to have someone who is flexible with their availability and also comfortable with working late and early in the morning (for bat surveys).”

Please contact me if you are interested and I will put you in touch with Morgan.

Volunteer Research Assistant – Madagascar (sent in by Rob Gandola, thank you Rob!)

“This project is looking for a volunteer field assistant to help with ongoing research on the ecology of southern woolly lemurs. The study site is home to five species of lemur: the collared brown lemur, brown mouse lemur, fat-tailed dwarf lemur, greater dwarf lemur, and the southern woolly lemur. The volunteer research assistant will work alongside a small team of field biologists and local guides. The project is scheduled to run from mid-November 2013 to mid-March 2014. There is no specific deadline and applications will be accepted until positions are filled.

Basic housing will be available at certain study sites, but applicants should anticipate long periods of camping and should be able to provide their own tent. Whilst in the bush meals will be prepared by a resident cook. Applicants should budget approx. ÂŁ50 per month for food.
