SEEN 3.2 Southampton news

A big thank you to Neil Gostling and Biosoc for arranging Prof Alice Roberts talk yesterday, it was a great start to biosoc’s year and I look forward to the next event (which I can promote here, so let me know where and when)

Ben McCaughan (2nd year Zoology) sent me a very enthusiastic email this week “I noticed the RSPB stood outside the Student Union today, and on talking to them, thought it would be good to share some of what I learned. Firstly, only 2% of what the RSPB does is actually focused on birds, and in fact the Society has a large number or projects focused both in the UK and internationally, including working in Indonesia with Sumatran Tigers. In the UK they have over 180 reserves, which for those interested in Ecology and Animal behaviour would be well worth a visit. A year’s membership is £5 a month, and gives access to these reserves, as well as bimonthly magazines and other information which a lot of students may find really relevant to their courses. You can sign up on their website for volunteer work worldwide, on many different projects in all different areas. And of course, If you sign up, you get a free tiger toy! (Oh yeah!) (or a book if you want). They will be back in front of the Union on Monday and I felt this was well worth sharing for anyone interested in conservation/ ecology/ animal welfare / cuddly toys.”

Thank you Ben!

You can read more about the RSPB’s work in Hampshire here http://www.rspb.org.uk/nearyou/index.aspx?c=hampshire I also think that someone from their research team would probably be willing to give a talk about their research (hint, hint biosoc! Ask them to talk about albatrosses).

Biology reading group

We had good attendance at our book deciding meeting last week. The decided book was “Your inner fish” by Neil Shubin. We will be meeting at 1-2pm on Wednesday. I am trying to book another room because the previous one was not really suitable (although we could have composed evolution-inspired music). I will email the room change once it is confirmed.
