From 2014-15 SEEN contributor of the year, Owen Middleton – “I saw something on BBC that you may have been aware of anyway but thought it would be good for the next SEEN edition and is relevant to the MRes Wildlife Conservation course as it’s about Kenya!
As a way to combat and deter poaching, a forensic laboratory has been set up in Kenya by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The lab will allow a DNA database to be built up of certain endangered animals in Kenya which will give solid evidence of illegal poaching if any illegal material is found. It will enable the trace back to animals within regions of Kenya and show undeniable evidence that poaching is occuring in certain areas with the hope of causing a decline in the numbers of poachers as the risks are increased.
