I did my PhD in the same department and at the same time as Dr Emily Grossman, although she worked on cells and I worked on beetles. We were also in the same student society, the exceedingly high brow, sophisticated and the epitome of cool, the Manchester University Gilbert & Sullivan Society (MUGSS for short). Emily was the leading lady and she chose to go to drama school after finishing her PhD. She is now a bit of a TV star, featuring most recently on “Duck quacks don’t echo” on Sky1.
