SEEN 3.4

Dear all,

It’s been very quiet since the last edition. Remember to send in links to anything that you find interesting whilst literature searching. You could also send in species of the week suggestions.

Looking forward to hearing from you ,

Judith

I attended SpotOn London last week, hosted by Nature Publishing Group. The idea is to get science onlinehttp://www.nature.com/spoton/ . All the content is now available online, including the plenary lecture from Ben Goldacre (of “Bad Science” fame). One of the biggest things I took away was this, 25 research thingshttp://25researchthings2010.wordpress.com/ which our library doesn’t yet provide training in but through the blog from the University of Huddersfield, you can actually go through all of them yourself in your own time. Lots of new skills, which employers will be looking for bright, young things like yourselves to be able to do for them (perhaps the hack day could be your start?!).

Insects for beginners

Hampshire Museums Service is holding an introduction to insects and the different insect groups on 6th April. The day-long workshop will cost £15. 1st years, we will be in Spain so you won’t be able to attend this time. 2ndand 3rd years, let me know if you’re interested and I can send you a booking form.

Christine Taylor from the museums service, noticed this PhD on climate-driven impacts on plant-pollinator interactions on the Royal Entomological Society pages and thought some of the 3rd years may be interestedhttp://www.royensoc.co.uk/student/overview.htm

First year Biology student, Sophie Watts, send in this link about microchipping of dormice in Cheshirehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/19846366 . Sophie also thought that you may be interested to hear that the British Ecological Society is free for one year for all studentshttp://www.britishecologicalsociety.org/about_bes/membership/membership_special_offer.php . There are member benefits, including being able to apply for their small project research grants (thank you Sophie!).

Experimental Evolution – Biology Letters has a special edition on this topic, with all content free to access onlinehttp://rsbl.royalsocietypublishing.org/site/misc/experimental_evolution.xhtml

You can read a blog overview of experimental evolution herehttp://beastbardbot.wordpress.com/2012/10/04/experimental-evolution-an-overview/
