Biodiversity seminar
You are invited to attend the 5th annual Biodiversity monitoring projects seminar on Wednesday 12th February at 2pm in 35/1001. In Summer 2013 recent graduates from the University of Southampton’s Biological Sciences, Ocean & earth sciences and Environmental Sciences programmes worked as ecological researchers, collecting data for collaborative projects with two local partners: Southampton City Council and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. In total data was collected for 3 projects.
The three projects were:
Distribution and abundance of giant hogweed along the Avon water
Effect of environmental stewardship options on bumblebees
Effect of lighting on Southampton Common on bats
You will be able to find out about the scheme (3rd years, you could apply for this summer) and about other research project and work experience opportunities.
Fieldwork assistants
Interested in gaining some field or lab experience in ecology? Or both? PhD student Becks Spake says:
Hello there! I am looking at how forest biodiversity varies with stand age in the New Forest. Part of this work involves sampling fungal mycelium – taking soil cores – from planted and ancient forest plots in the New Forest, and then extracting the DNA. If you fancy a morning of fieldwork in the New Forest, and/or helping me out processing samples in the lab – then please get in touch!
