SEEN 5.11

Owen Middleton (of SEEN and Bella Vista fame) says “Here’s an interesting article (for SEEN) that involves hunting by echolocation in Harbour Porpoises and touches on convergent evolution:

Dolphins, whales, porpoises are similar to bats in that they detect prey location via emitting different frequencies of clicks (echolocation). It was thought that this involved a narrow acoustic range but this study suggests that this hunting method, in Harbour Porpoises, may be more sophisticated and acoustic beams remain flexible until their prey has been caught – like some bats. Flexible echolocation ranges until prey capture reduces the chance of prey escape. This is a convergent evolutionary  hunting method seen in both marine vertebrates and terrestrial bats whereby acoustic flexibility is selected for hunting.
