BioBlitz 2016 volunteering

We are looking for volunteers for our BioBlitz events this summer. Our events have 3 themes this year: 1. On campus; 2. In local schools; 3. In the city centre.

  1. On campus: we will be having a BioBlitz on campus on Wednesday 8th June. The aim of the day will be for our students and staff to search for wildlife on campus. Experts from Southampton Natural History will also attend. We would value your help to help on the walks that members of the natural history society will be leading. So far it looks like we will have 3 walks and also a hunt for all the bird and bat boxes on campus.
  2. In local schools: during the 1st 3 weeks of June, our BioBlitz interns, Meg and Olly, will be leading BioBlitzes in local schools. So far we have confirmed: Monday 6th June at  Fair Oak school, Thursday 9th June at Camelsdale primary school (this is actually in West Sussex) and we have to finalise a date at Awbridge school. If you have a car, we would really appreciate knowing, as it can be hard to get to schools. You can claim back mileage from me afterwards. There are several other local schools that I am in contact with. If you are interested in being involved, I can let you know as we confirm more schools and dates.
  3. In the city centre: for this year only, we will be taking BioBlitzing into the city centre. We have been awarded funding from 2 pots of university money which mean that we have been able to sponsor a zebra on the upcoming zany zebras sculpture trail, which will be in the city centre for 10 weeks this summer, from 16th July. There will be weekly events happening at the sculpture, as well as the opportunity to interact with local scouting groups and a summer school (our conservation cadets, I cannot take credit, this was Meg’s idea and she is also the one in contact with scouting groups). If you are around over the summer and able to come along, please let us know. We will need volunteers every week.

Please let me know what you are interested in, your availability and also, if you are interested in the schools events, if you have a car.
